Corner of My Eye
March 20 - 30th, 2025 at MEZZANINE
This show of paintings and works on paper by Boy Blue, Injune Park, Matthew Clifton, Nico Morgan and Zhengwei Li features people from a distance, from behind, obscured, unposed, cut off — all watched. Artists have often functioned as furtive observers, and new digital lenses have only made more visual languages available for representing these public and private moments.
The refusal to depict people straight on imbues these portraits with greater subjectivity, this ambiguity allowing the artists to better present emotional truths. The language of phone photography allows us to make images out of glances. The remove of voyeurism frees artists to explore the queer gaze. We all get away with looking at each other.
