Scrap Shoe Series
I’ve been working at a desk in SET Lewisham since January 2026. I have been using the time and space to go through all of the reject paper I saved from my time at Artichoke Print Workshop, which I’d torn poorly or to the wrong dimensions.
Developing from past paintings, I’ve been drawing living shoes. I think framing shoes as animal entities plays into the tension in their design between the organic/'“natural” (that they have to conform to the human foot and gait, that they’re made of animal products) and the artificial/performative (their use as social signifiers of gender, class; their sometimes literal reshaping of the human foot)
The drawings below, presented chronologically, are pencil and or watercolour on paper unless indicated otherwise. They date from January 2026 onwards.
